Late Shri Jaidutt Vaila, freedom fighter, Government Postgraduate College, Ranikhet, Almora (Uttarakhand) began its operations in 1973 as a small campus in the lush green meadows of Ranikhet, a hilly region and cantonment town in Almora district. Ranikhet is currently the regimental headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment (KRC) and the Naga Regiment. Government Postgraduate College, Ranikhet was established by the Uttar Pradesh government with a single Bachelor of Arts course. Since then, the college has seen many changes and developments and is now a multidisciplinary college encompassing all major disciplines in arts, science, and commerce to meet the needs of the youth of the region.
After land acquisition, the college was relocated to its current location in Chilianaula. Located at an altitude of approximately 1750 meters, this tranquil valley is away from the main city and provides the best environment for study.
Since its inception, the college has been renowned for providing quality education in a variety of subjects. The college has played a vital role in shaping the future of students in this region by meeting the public's need for higher education.

The college is surrounded by predominantly rural areas. It was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B grade in 2012 and a B+ grade (2.64) in 2023 and is affiliated with Soban Singh Jeena University, Almora. Recently, several self-financed and professional courses have been introduced at the college. The college also houses a regional office and a Center for Educational Studies of the Uttarakhand Open University.
Recognizing the importance of high-quality education globally, the college currently offers approximately 17 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate programs. The undergraduate program is a three-year degree program divided into six semesters; and the postgraduate program is a two-year program divided into four semesters. All courses are taught bilingually (English and Hindi).
The college has adequate faculty for each department and almost all positions are filled by highly qualified teachers who cater to the needs of all students to the best of their abilities. Recently, the college has made significant progress by adopting the New Education Policy 2020 in line with the policymakers' vision of providing quality education through holistic development of students. Additionally, the college has several projects in progress, including construction of new buildings, computer labs, library, PG blocks, maintenance of old buildings, solar panels, rainwater harvesting tanks, etc.
